Accessibility statement
This statement applies to Dawn Chorus Quest. We want as many people as possible to be able to enjoy the dawn chorus, whether or not they can hear it. The site has been designed to meet WCAG 2.2 level AA — the standard required of UK public-sector websites under the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) Accessibility Regulations 2018.
How accessible this site is
- Every round is fully playable without sound — each song is rendered as a scrolling waveform and described in plain English.
- Audio never auto-plays unmuted; the hero ambience starts muted with a clearly labelled unmute control.
- All interactive controls are reachable and operable with a keyboard, with visible focus indicators.
- Icon-only buttons carry text labels for screen readers.
- Images of birds carry descriptive alternative text; purely decorative imagery is hidden from assistive technology.
- Animations and particle effects respect the operating-system reduce motion setting.
- Text colour contrast meets WCAG AA; the layout reflows down to 320 px wide and up to 200% zoom.
- A “skip to main content” link appears as soon as you press Tab.
Known limitations
- The live 3D particle visualisation is decorative; the accessible song shape is the waveform and the written caption underneath it.
- Bird-song recordings are sourced from Wikimedia Commons and have not been individually transcribed; the “song shape” caption is the textual equivalent.
